Fool's Gold a world music don't-miss

It isn't that we're all that excited, it's just that the uncontrolled exuberance that Fool's Gold brings to the party is impossible to resist. World music is probably the biggest beneficiary of that whole business with the internets and all. It used to be that world music was thought of as smiling brown people in tribal robes, playing foreign folk music that ranked high on the list of Stuff White People Like.

What's happening now is that Internet radio, samples and other technological sparks are setting fire to creativity, and, increasingly, the result is the pastiche of Fool's Gold. It's rock. Yes, the band is playing the World Music Fest, but make no mistake about it -- this is rock 'n' roll.

Musically, what will strike you first is the joy with which this Los Angeles-based nonet attacks almost every tune. But before you get to shimmying, have a closer listen. Yes, there's an edge to that guitar, and that percussive slam comes straight from Africa. But hang on a second ... the vocalist is singing in Yiddish? What the heck is going on here?

Which is what we've been trying to say. Yes, this music is rooted in polyrhythms that will set your feet and hips afire. But Fool's Gold also rewards a nice, close listen. Guitars trill, drums hop and qawwali-style hand claps propel it all.

Music that makes you move has a bump and a thump to it. Fool's Gold has that sound in spades, plus that bonus rock goodness.

The edge comes from real rock-based musicians from bands such as The Fall and We Are Scientists. Couple that with an Argentine pop star and a Mexican/Brazilian visual artist, and you have a party.

9 p.m. Saturday, Navy Pier, 600 E. Grand Ave. Free (!); 9 p.m. Sunday, Bottom Lounge, 1375 W. Lake St. (with BLK JKS); $12; bottomlounge.com...
